Deep fried pieces of country fried steak are served over steamed jasmine rice with sautéed mushrooms and peppers. Topped with a flavourful homemade curry sauce and finished with sliced green onion and toasted sesame seeds for a Japanese comfort classic.

red, green or yellow pepper, chopped 1

cloves garlic 2 tbsp
curry powder 1 tbsp
chicken broth 2 cups
soy sauce 2 tbsp
honey 1 tsp
each salt and pepper 1/4 tsp

Method

  1. Deep Fryer: Preheat oil to 350°F. Place steaks in oil, heavy breading side face down; cook for 3 1/2 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  2. Katsu Curry Sauce: Heat oil in large skillet set over medium heat; sauté onion, mushrooms and pepper for 8 to 10 minutes or until tender and liquid has evaporated. Add garlic; cook for 1 minute. Add flour and curry powder; cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add broth, soy sauce, honey, salt and pepper; bring to boil, stirring constantly. Simmer for about 10 minutes or until sauce is thickened.
  3. Slice steaks and arrange over top of rice. Spoon curry sauce over top. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds.
